It has been a great end of the year for us here at LearningSource. Our customer base continues to grow globally, our development programme has really ramped up, and we have recently expanded our team. To top it all off we have just secured a significant investment from the New Zealand Ministry of Science and Innovation (MSI) to support our continued global expansion. As you can imagine, we are rather chuffed.
The MSI investment will help us extend the integration capabilities of the platform, including;
Know any great .net developers and testers?
We are currently recruiting so if you know anyone who loves developing great software, we are keen to hear from them at email@example.com.
We hope you have a great holiday over the Christmas break. We look forward to keeping you updated on what looks like will be a very exciting year ahead for us next year.
The LearningSource Team
We’ve recently begun using Software as a Service provider Zendesk for our online help. Zendesk is a great tool that acts as both self support in the way of quick guides and problem ticketing.
We’ve got a lot of content still to write but we’ve started well and already have some useful tools on the site for users. This will make our life easier but most importantly for customers it’ll mean they get answers to their questions quickly and effectively.
Already up on Zendesk we have Quick guides that give quick easy information that is readily searchable;
The great thing about Zendesk is that it’s readily searchable – type in “payment” for example and you’ll get all the content items that include that word payment (at the time of writing, eight different places).
Even better, if you can’t find the answer you are looking for in our online help, you can simply ask the question by submitting a request.
Zendesk is a really great company, trying to do to the help desk what we at LearningSource are doing for training management – working with them to build our support offering has been a great experience.
Wellington to the World is an event run by the ICT professional group Unlimited Potential. It showcases a handful of Wellington’s hottest ICT startups every years in a quick-pitch 10 minutes presentation style. The presentations happen live but are also livecast globally – providing an opportunity for a select group of companies to shine.
We were really pleased to have been invited to the 2010 Wellington to the World event along with three other outstanding product companies – Wellington to the World has historically been a launching pad to real success for companies – we’re hoping that this year is no different.
LearningSource CEO and founder John Mitchell gave an entertaining and informative presentation, check it out below.
Since we started LearningSource, our aim has always been to build an international business. Partly because the cost of developing a robust software platform demands a broader market than just new Zealand but mainly because we genuinely believe our products fills a void that organisations across the globe are asking for.
As part of our global roll out, we’re excited to introduce our business development manager for Australia, Ruth McDavitt. Ruth has vast experience with business development having spent many years working for a number of economic development agencies. More importantly for LearnignSource, she’s had a deep involvement with training delivery and so has an awareness of the needs of training providers.
Ruth will initially be focusing on Sydney, and specifically looking at the needs of private training organisations as well as Government agencies. In the initial stages she’ll be making contact with training providers and inviting them to participate in one of our regular webinars or to go ahead and sign-up to our free trial. In the near future Ruth will be visiting with training providers in Australia to get a deeper understanding of their specific needs and show them how LearningSource can meet their requirements.
We’d like to take the opportunity to welcome Ruth to LearningSource, she can be contact directly here.
We’re all about making it easy to use our product – it’s the fundamental ethos behind LearningSource – here’s an example of what we mean.
When we started out, we built our system on the principle that everyone has their own email address. You’d think so wouldn’t you? I mean it’s 2009. Well unfortunately despite all the free email services outs there, Gmail, Hotmail, Yahoo and the like, it seems the end users of LearningSource are not quite there.
We have an ulterior motive for wishing this – having a unique email address means you can easily ensure duplicate contact accounts are not inadvertently created.
Ok, so we’ll admit that we got it wrong. It seems some people are still sharing email addresses between multiple individuals. We have therefore enhanced our authentication system to cater for this situation and allow more than one person to share the same email address. Where a user shares an email address with someone else they can choose a unique ‘Username’ as their logon instead of just using their email address.
We have still managed to keep the registration process simple and seamless, meaning users don’t need to setup accounts before they can register themselves or someone else on a course. Creating accounts just happens automatically. We have also retained the smart process where LearningSource automatically checks for duplicates before creating a new contact in your database.
Without labouring the point, it’s another example of the benefit of internet application – changes like this are automatically rolled out to all customers without them having to go through the time and hassle of installing software updates.
We are gearing up to rollout a range of face-to-face and live online presentations for customers and partners. To promote and coordinate the activity, we have just launched a new area of our website – LearningSource Presentations.
We are using LearningSource to manage this new area of our website and taking advantage of our recently launched Live Online course feature to deliver the online presentations.
The presentations are proving to be a great success. We have found that what we achieve in one online session would normally take days to organise and, when delivered face to face would incur extensive travel and accommodation costs. As an example, we recently ran a session in which we had participants from Blenheim, Tauranga, and Auckland. The travel and time taken to deliver the same presentation in person would have been extensive.
We are keen to show off our new online presentation functionality, so sign up for one of our free upcoming sessions;
It’s always nice to tell stories that show of the speed and responsiveness that software as a service brings. It’s doubly nice when the story highlights our own responsiveness as an organisation. A few weeks ago, Emma Mortimer from Business Training Marlborough gave us a call.
BTM is a new training organisation that offers training in costing & pricing, writing a marketing plan, essential sales skills and small business survival tactics, among other things. They’d looked at 20 software products in a search for something that would let them run their training management – they’re a small organisation so they wanted something economically priced, quick to implement and simple to use.
BTM didn’t have their own website and so they were looking at a complete design and build solution that was looking to cost them in excess of $15,000, take months to implement and require completely manual processing of course enrolment and the like.
Luckily for them however, another training provider pointed them in our direction. Little more than a couple of weeks later, LearningSource was able to provide BTM a solution that, within a budget less than a fifth of what they were initially looking at, gave them a full website plus automated registration – thus saving them both in development cost, but more importantly giving them efficiency gains going forwards. This was achieved by using one of the standard LearningSource website templates – allowing for a sub three week time frame from initial contact to go-live.
Emma explained to us that some of the simple things are the most beneficial for them; In the past they would write custom word documents for course enrolment confirmation. These would then be exported as a pdf and emailed to the attendee. Now with LearningSource the entire process is automated.
Emma also told of an experience she had the other night. She was at home and noticed that a course place became available due to a cancellation. Having access via the internet she was able to assess that there was someone on a waiting list for the course, confirm their place and send them enrolment confirmation – all in only a few minutes and with a few mouse clicks.
